Scientific Name:
Acer platanoides L.

Leaves:
4-7 in., 5 sharp pointed lobes with a few large teeth. Very dark, dull green to bronze. Yellow foliage in fall. Long stem with milky sap.

Flowers:
Small with 5 greenish-yellow petals in upright or spreading clusters appearing with or before leaves

Buds:
Large, reddish-brown. Terminal bud is larger than the laterals.

Bark:
Gray or brown becoming rough and furrowed into narrow ridges that form diamond-shaped spaces similar to, but finer than white ash.

Height:
Height of 60 ft.

Diameter:
Diameter of 2 ft.

Range:
Native across Europe. Widely planted in the U.S. as a city shade tree. Not native in Vermont.

Fast growing, invasive, and tolerant of harsh, city conditions.
